Position Overview:
- In keeping with our People Plan's culture of learning and core values of collaboration and change and growth, we are pleased to share a permanent full-time leadership opportunity of Assistant Supervisor, Operations (Horticulture and Community Gardens) within our Parks &
Cemetery Division of INS. The successful incumbent will assist with the planning, coordination, direction and supervision of the work duties related to horticulture maintenance in city parks, facilities and streetscapes. The successful incumbent will also participate as a member of the supervisory team for the winter control maintenance program.**Responsibilities**:
- Coordinates, executes and provides input to horticulture programs, services and/or processes. Delegates year-round work assignments to full-time and temporary staff ensuring appropriate scheduling and quality control (summer and winter operations).
- Assigns, prioritizes, monitors and evaluates work activities based on resource capacity and operational priority.
- Ensures work is performed efficiently and effectively in accordance with City or division maintenance standards/specifications, and other legislative requirements (e.G.:
Labour and Health and Safety Regulations, Traffic Control, etc.)
- Assist with the daily operation of the greenhouse, ordering supplies/plants, schedules, and interior plant maintenance.
- Assist with the set up and operation of the Community Gardens.
- Implements and oversees the delivery of operations work as defined by the supervisor.
- Responds and investigates public inquiries, by-law issues and initiates work orders as appropriate.
- Monitors performance including initiating corrective action and/or progressive discipline when required.
- Liaises closely with Operations Supervisors and/or Manager to report progress, resolve issues, and refine planning.
- Assists with development and maintenance of policy, safe operating procedures, fleet permit requirements, and other related administrative duties.
- Coordinates and works with Human Resources to hire temporary labourers to achieve target staff resource needs.
- Maintains and tracks accurate records of staff, equipment and material utilized in the performance of operations activities.
- Monitors operating expenditures to ensure compliance with budgets.
- Interprets as appropriate planting plans and designs for landscape maintenance and installation of new developments.
- Ensures all equipment is operated competently, safely and maintained in a good operating condition ensuring proper and timely documentation for repair of defective equipment.
- Represents the Corporation and Department in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner in all dealings with the public, other groups, and associations.
- Keeps current with ongoing technical, cultural, and procedural improvements in horticulture.
- Trains and guides full-time and temporary staff and volunteers involved in activities.
- Supports information dissemination, training, and communication for horticulture activities.
- Liaises with and oversees the work of contractors and other service providers.
- Accurately maintains daily records for the purpose of tracking, reporting, and documenting of maintenance activities and adjusts maintenance schedules as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
