Youth &
Family Worker/Noon HourSupervisor
- The Youth and Family worker works to improve the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of vulnerable children, youth and families. The Youth and Family worker works in conjunction with the special education/learning support teacher and the school administration to implement educational support strategies for students in grades 9-12 - examples include behaviour support, social and emotional well-being and advocating on behalf of the student with school staff. These positions are located in Nelson, Kalso, and Creston. An applicant can choose to work at one or all of these locations. The position would include support focus for intensive behaviour designation students. Knowledge of trauma informed practice would be an asset.
This posting is due to a significant change in position.
The incumbent will need to attend a variety of meetings, including School Based Team meetings, inter-agency meetings, meetings with students, etc. The incumbent will need to have either a vehicle or reliable transportation so that he/she can attend off-campus meetings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
- Ability to work as part of a structured team and to implement and carry out programs
- Ability to connect and monitor students with outside agencies
- Ability to advocate on behalf of students
- Knowledge of the new graduation program
- Ability to work in a confidential manner on behalf of students
- Ability to contribute effectively in regularly scheduled meetings.
- Ensure a safe and respectful environment
- Work with Ab Ed students
- Work in collaboration to plan and deliver Ab Ed specific programming to students in individual and group settings.
Required Qualifications:
University graduation or a minimum of a College Diploma in the Behavioural Sciences field. Two (2) years post secondary education is required. The SPEDA/Selkirk College one (1) year program in human services may count as one (1) year, but additional university training (i.E. psychology, sociology, interviewing, youth studies, counselling theory, conflict resolution) is required along with a demonstration of supervised experience in childcare counselling.
SD8 YOUTH AND FAMILY WORKER JOB DESCRIPTION:
Job Summary:
An employee assigned to the school(s) school based team to provide support to students with behavioural, emotional and social disorders, through individual, family and group work as directed by the Principal. If the student (s) the Youth and Family Worker is assigned to work with requires an IEP, the Youth and Family Worker will be expected to work as a member of the IE Planning Team.
Job Requirements:
1. University graduation or a minimum of a College Diploma in the Behavioural
Sciences field. Two (2) years post secondary education is required. The SPEDA/Selkirk College one (1) year program in human services may count as one (1)year, but additional university training (e.G. Psychology, Sociology, Interviewing, youth studies, Counseling theory) is required along with a demonstration of supervised experience in childcare counseling.
2. Ability to interact and liaise with caregivers, community agencies and other individuals in a non-judgmental and supportive manner.
3. Ability to communicate appropriately with other staff members, students and parents. Have well developed listening skills.
4. Ability to work with non-compliant students in a non-confrontational manner. Training in non-violent crisis intervention will be provided.
5. Ability to be part or a collaborative team, maintaining a professional attitude and confidentiality in working relationships with all school personnel, students, parents and the public.
6. Ability to be flexible and work with mínimal supervision.
7. Ability to work as part of a school based planning team as required - see Special Services District Handbook - page 7 and Collective Agreement - page 101.
8. May be required to dispense approved medications as prescribed by the student’s doctor in accordance with Board Policy No. 310 (September 22, 1998) and be required to sign Request for Medication Form attached thereto. Training will be provided.
9. May be required to provide crisis intervention, due to the nature of the work. This will be based on District protocol.
10. Child related team requirements and special skills needed will be identified for special assignments. Any special skills required will be outlined on the specific Job Duties portion of the Job Description.
11. May be required to have a valid B.C. (Class 5) Driver’s License.
12. Must have understanding and knowledge of safe work practices.
13. Perform other job related duties as may be assigned.
Noon Hour Supervisor
