**Position Summary**
Dan's Legacy is currently offering a temporary (parental leave coverage) full-time position as a Food Security Support Worker to serve as a crucial link in maintaining food recovery programming for food banks across the Lower Mainland. The Food Security Support Worker will be part of a small team centred around food recovery, social enterprise, and supported employment for marginalized youth. This position reports directly to the Manager - Job Skills Training.
**Duties &
Responsibilities**:
- Operate the Food Recovery Van Mon-Fri (including statutory holidays);
pick up surplus food from donors and deliver to the food recipients on the schedule
- Review donations and sort food items as per instructions from Manager or Diner Chef
- Deliver grocery hampers to youth clients in Lower Mainland as needed
- Provide supervision and mentorship of youth clients and supported employment participants
- Maintain safety and sanitation of Food Recovery Van - maintain vehicle log and notify supervisor immediately in case of required maintenance
- Liaise with other teams of social workers and therapists to provide holistic support for clients across programs
- Provide staffing and facilitation support to wrap-around programming for youth, including supported employment station.
- Respond to client emergencies:
overdose, self-harm, suicidality, psychosis, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**Certification and qualifications**:
- Must be double vaccinated against COVID-19
- A successful criminal record and vulnerable sector check will be required prior to the start of employment.
- Must have a Class 5 License with a clean abstract.
- Experience with professional driving, deliveries, or warehousing is an asset.
**Skills and experience**:
- Experience with loading and unloading trucks.
- Physical ability to consistently lift and move large and heavy loads - up to 50 lbs.
- Experience using handcart and/or dolly.
- Excellent understanding of technology and are proficient on a smartphone/tablet
- Strong communication skills - forthcoming about providing updates about your work and reaching out for guidance when needed.
- Outgoing &
friendly - able to initiate and maintain relationships with youth who present with interpersonal difficulties or poor social skills.
- Highly reliable - follows through on commitments to clients and team;
asks for help proactively when needed.
- Good boundaries and self-care practices - some understanding of difficult interpersonal patterns and how to maintain objectivity and patience when working with clients.
- Ability to start and end shift in New Westminster where office and Food Recovery Van are located.
**About Dan's Legacy**
Dan's Legacy provides trauma-informed and culturally sensitive counselling and life-skills programs to youth at risk in Metro Vancouver. These young people, aged 15 to 25, are at significant risk of overdose, self-harm, homelessness, and suicide. Dan's Legacy's therapy and outreach teams go directly to the youth wherever they are, there are no wait lists, and all the organisation's services are free. In the past year, Dan's Legacy helped over 400 youth stabilise their mental health, and begin working towards their educational, employment and recovery goals.
