**Hazardous Waste Technician**:
**Primary Purpose**:
The Hazardous Waste Technician completes the pickup, handling, categorization, bulking, lab-packing, administration, and all other hazardous waste disposal processes for the USask hazardous waste management program. The Hazardous Waste Technician provides expertise and support for best practices and regulatory compliance in all facets of chemical, biological and radioactive hazardous waste disposal, and laboratory safety. This role assists in the development, implementation, and advancement of environmental protection programs and initiatives for the University.
**Nature of Work**:
Reporting to the Environmental Safety Technician, this position works in response to the service needs of the campus community regarding the safe collection, handling, processing, and disposal of hazardous waste generated across USask research, teaching, and operations. The Hazardous Waste Technician addresses issues and concerns, responds to technical queries, promotes best practices in health and safety and chemical management, and works with stakeholders to meet applicable legislative requirements. The technician is a member of the campus spill response team.
The technician will be required to regularly wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment in the course of duties. Materials handling, including some moderate to heavy physical labour and driving of a large truck is required of this position.
The Hazardous Waste Technician works in potentially hazardous environments, and responds to, and assists with, emergency situations during regular working hours and after-hours if called in.
**Typical Duties**
- Completes the execution and administration of the hazardous waste management and environmental protection programs, services, and initiatives.
- Assists in conducting workplace inspections and provides/completes corrective actions to address deficiencies.
- Assists in the completion, development, and update of all standard operating procedures and the WMF emergency response plan.
- Completes facility housekeeping tasks, inspections, and coordination of maintenance, related equipment, and vehicle.
- Provide technical expertise, accurate and timely advice to the university community in support of best practices and regulatory compliance in health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
- Provide support to departmental program requirements and regulatory compliance program objectives, projects, and initiatives.
- Provide technical expertise, accurate and timely advice to the university community regarding handling, collection, storage and packaging of hazardous materials and waste.
- Ensure contractual obligations and agreements are met to provide safe disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Provide support to campus safety committees to support their mandate, initiatives, and effective operation.
- Adhere to, and promote compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements, work practices and procedures as prescribed by the university and pursuant to applicable legislation.
- Other duties as assigned.
**Education and Experience**:
Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Toxicology required.
A minimum of three years’ work experience in hazardous waste management including handling, transporting, processing, bulking, lab packing, and overall shipment and disposal of chemical, biological, and radioactive hazardous waste materials is required.
Experience in chemical and laboratory safety, radiation safety, and biosafety, is required.
Maintaining a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a safe driving record is required.
Post-secondary education in occupational health and safety, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is an asset.
Professional credentials in occupational health and safety, chemistry, environmental protection, or related discipline is an asset.
**Skills**:
- Working knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental protection.
- Working knowledge of chemistry, lab safety, WHMIS, chemical handling, and hazardous waste disposal.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labour and ability to work in an environment containing hazardous substances.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Working collaboratively in a team of safety professionals to produce stronger outcomes than working alone.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective planning and organizational skills including managing competing priorities.
- Proficient communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Proficient driving skills and ability to effectively drive a large truck.
