_Sustainable Active and Passive Mechanical Systems Simulation and Optimization_ (May-Aug 2023)
Position Overview
Applicants, please note that this position is for Summer (May-August 2023 work term)
This is an opportunity to work with a team of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Research Scientists implementing cutting-edge software workflows to simulate and optimize airflow in real-world building projects. You will work closely with a team of professionals, contributing to the research and development of a software prototype that will assist in the selection and sizing of a building’s mechanical systems based on the unique conditions of local climate, building geometry, occupant health, energy use, embodied carbon, operational carbon, as well as construction cost-related decisions. This work will facilitate the convergence of architecture and engineering knowledge in early-stage building design, contributing to better design approaches that are more sustainable while promoting greater occupant well-being.
**Responsibilities**:
- Be an active member of a team developing features/services helping provide for the best approaches around design and optimization of sustainable HVAC systems for buildings- Gathering relevant building information data to create a library of case studies- Ability to work with optimization algorithms to explore a range of high-performing design options while navigating trade-offs based on project constraints and goals- Evaluating predictive wind-models and the ways that natural ventilation can be integrated into the design process to support an occupants’ well-being- Working with a team to develop and validate parametric building energy models
Minimum Qualifications- Currently pursuing a degree in civil/mech engineering or related discipline with a strong background/focus in architecture. Or Currently pursuing a degree in architecture with a strong background/focus in civil/mech engineering- You like to work with others, you communicate well and are ok with presenting your ideas in front of a group- You are a fast learner, willing to quickly ramp-up on new, related sustainability-focused topics- A knowledge of and familiarity with HVAC systems, types, and selection methods- Experience with building energy modeling (Revit MEP and EnergyPlus) and IDF files- Familiarity with building design and analysis software, with ability to code custom solutions- Understanding of qualitative building metrics, including occupant wellness and comfort
