Are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small
Portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve,
Located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name
Musqueam relates back to the River Grass, the name of the grass is məθkʷəy̓. There is a
Story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how
We became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm
(Musqueam) - People of the River Grass. We have always moved throughout our
Territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and
Gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite
The devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our
Ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters
Continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a
Source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. To learn
The Junior Ecologist will work primarily in the field at xʷəyeyət (Iona Island),
Roles &
Responsibilities
- Participate in wildlife studies
A. Support wildlife-related field work and standardized surveys, such as land birds, raptor/heron stick nests, owl, water birds, marsh birds, nighthawks, small mammal trapping, bat surveys, invertebrates, various amphibian and reptile inventories, and mammal surveys;
B. Support aquatic field work and assessments;
C. Conduct data entry and analysis;
D. Prepare reports and attend meetings for non-technical experts
- Represent Musqueam’s interests and traditional stewardship practices
E. Attend cultural and environmental trainings;
F. Act as a Musqueam representative on site, and as a liaison between Musqueam and the Contractor;
G. Document areas of concern and for improvement
- At the request of the Secretariat, or at own discretion, prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of:
H. Correspondence for management, Title and Rights Committee, and/or Chief and Council
I. Briefing materials for Chief and Council, Committees of Council (Title and Rights Committee), working groups, and senior management. This material may include researching issues and ensuring prepared responses are consistent with Musqueam First Nation policy and strategic direction
- Assist with community outreach and engagement sessions, including preparing presentation materials and newsletters
- Maintain records in accordance with MIB’s file plan
- Other tasks as required
Qualification and Skills
- Experience conducting field surveys and monitoring
- Driver’s license and ability to travel limited distances
- Cultural competency and knowledge of Musqueam culture and interests is an asset
- Successful criminal record check
- First Aid and other applicable training would be beneficial
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication, organization and time management skills
- Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial habitat restoration best practices
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and complete tasks/project in accordance with stated deadlines
- Ability to work in a team environment
Working Conditions
- The work is performed in the field and office environment
