Machinists set up and operate various machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to manufacture or modify parts or products to precise dimensions. Machining and tooling inspectors check machined parts and tooling to ensure quality standards are maintained.
Tasks and duties
Read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints;
Calculate dimensions and tolerances, measure and arrange components to be machined;
Set up, operate and maintain various machine tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining work, including sawing, turning, milling, boring, planing, drilling and grinding;
Fit and assemble machined metal parts and sub-assemblies using hand and power tools;
Verify, using precision measuring instruments, that product dimensions are accurate and conform to specifications;
Set up, if necessary, and program machine tools for machining operators.
