Cad Rail has other facilities in Calgary, Lethbridge (under Caltrax banner) and has recently been selected by the ONxpress Transportation Partners association to provide all legacy fleet maintenance services for the Metrolinx rail fleet of approximately 1000 bi-level coaches and 90 locomotives. Cad rail’s delivery team will operate and maintain Metrolinx’s rail maintenance facilities in Etobicoke and Whitby, as well as in multiple overnight along with mid-day light servicing facilities located across the Metrolinx train service area.

Summary of the role:

The Mechanical Technician will be responsible for providing rail equipment maintenance services for the Metrolinx’s Legacy Fleet Maintenance operations.

This individual will collaborate with the management team, customers, suppliers, partners and involved stakeholders.

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, will be responsible for performing various maintenance tasks on rail coaches, cab cars and locomotives.

Core Accountabilities:

Confirm that all HSE policies, processes and procedures are being complied
Responsible for troubleshooting, analysis, fault detection, repair and test of both coach and locomotive mechanical systems, sub-systems and components including mechanical, pneumatic, and auxiliary equipment
Perform modifications from drawings, prints or mechanical systems on coaches and locomotives. Main engine lead readings
Alignment of rotating equipment;
(example:
compressor, auxiliary generator, HEP generator)
Wheel truing/operate wheel lathe machine
Strip and build traction motors
Inspections using the Single Car Test Device and orifice testing on locomotives
Quarterly and semi-annual air brake test on locomotive and cab car
Power assembly, main engine turbo charger, main engine and HEP injectors, locomotive traction motor, main engine governor (F59) and HEP actuator change outs
Pre, post, and numbered inspections – Locomotive
Locomotive, coach, and cab car preventive maintenance
Check operation of main engine shut down protective devices
Repair of couplers
Comply with the company’s applicable policies and procedures as well as human resources’ guidelines and the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Qualifications:

Ability to build strong rapport with the team and other unionized maintenance personnel
1 – 2 years experience working in a rail maintenance environment or equivalent type industry. Rail locomotive and passenger coach experience and knowledge is an asset
Capable of using computers and computer control systems
Skilled in troubleshooting techniques and a complete understanding of mechanical principles. Familiarity with repair and replacement of large diesel engines and components
Capable of reading and understand drawings, blueprints, manuals, and other specifications. Good communication skills
Experience using power and hand tools
Must possess a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license
Grade 12 or equivalent or a combination of education and work experience. Mechanical diploma from an accredited technical school or equivalent experience
Candidates will be required to show proof of skills. A test of skills will be required

Nice to have:

Experience working in an unionized environment
Familiarity with other industries such as Aerospace
Experience working in the rail industry with a comprehensive knowledge of rail equipment
