**Job Description**:
Summary
Hatch and Important Company have formed the Hatch Important Company Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. BHP’s Jansen Potash Project located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is BHP’s first and most advanced potash project. Jansen will add diversity and a Canadian presence to BHP’s global portfolio. Jansen’s large resource endowment provides the opportunity to develop it in stages, with anticipated initial capacity of 4.35 Mtpa. The BHP Board has recently sanctioned Jansen Project (Stage 1), with a US $5.7 billion investment. The project is now entering the construction phase, with the first potash expected in 2027.
The Jansen project has set up a dedicated team to execute the mining scope. As the mining scope is on the project critical path, this team supports the sequential nature of mining tasks while ensuring seamless interfaces with the rest of the Jansen project. This team will promote shared accountability between BHP and HBJV, trusting that the best person is selected for each role as they work towards safely delivering the mining scope on time, on budget, and with high quality. This team will strive for effective work planning, rapid and empowered decision-making, and continuous improvement through a joint construction and operational mindset. BHP and HBJV leadership hope to expose the team to new perspectives, ways of working, and long-term career progression opportunities.
The Project Controls Manager is responsible for cost engineering, cost estimating, cost analysis/control, and planning/scheduling activities for designated projects, or for discipline/project/proposal estimating or staff planning activities that require a high degree of technical skill and experience.
JOB DIMENSIONS:

Day-to-day cost control and planning and scheduling activities including task assignment for the Project Controls team
Project controls setup including coding and reporting
Schedule and cost-related changes within approval limit
Assurance of claimed progress and progress measurement by the IPT and Mining Contractors
Forecast approvals and sign-off
Supervision Received
Solid line supervision received from the Site Project Controls Manager pertaining to adherence to functional standards, processes, and tools
Dotted line supervision received from the Head Mining IPT pertaining to scope and planning direction
Supervision Exercised
Direct oversight of 2 direct reports within the Mining IPT:
Lead Planning - Underground
Lead Cost Control
Direct oversight of 4 direct reports within N3SR, supporting final liner scope:
Lead Project Services
Specialist Cost Engineering (x2)
Specialist Planning and Scheduling
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Ensures a strong personal commitment to safety
Oversees and manages Mining IPT planning and cost control resources
Analyses and monitors construction progress and proactively alerts the Mining IPT leadership team of any potential issues
Ensures BHP and HBJV Project Control procedures and best practices are applied by the project
Leverages existing project set up, project coding and project controls set-up and reporting
Manages project progress measurement and earned value
Interfaces with Mining Contractors and site Project Controls function
Leads the Project Controls team in delivering periodic status reports
Provides project services L1 functional assurance across IPT delivery
Manages preparation and quality of key reporting and management documents for IPT
Coordinates the development of an IPT managed scope forecast to project completion
Manages scope, cost, and schedule variance analysis, including proposing mitigation solutions
Supports project reviews (Execution Phase Reviews
- EPRs/Internal Asset Audits and other 3rd party audits)
Leads internal, Mining IPT self-functional assurance responsibilities for all Project Controls roles
Operates day-to-day ensuring that activities are prioritized in line with broader objectives
Ensures that they are managing their time effectively and adhering to deadlines
Ensures they are adhering to and exhibiting Jansen core values
**Qualifications**:
SKILLS / JOB KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A recognized bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience (i.E., Finance or Accounting, Quantity Surveying)
A recognized MBA degree is an asset
Certification for AACE and/or PMI, or other project management related certification is favourable
Minimum 15 - 20 years of relevant experience, including site-based roles, in a project environment with detailed knowledge of estimating, cost control, planning, and change management
Minimum 10 years of relevant post graduate experience in a people-leadership position, with demonstrated leadership/ management experience
Strong understanding of quality management processes and systems, and auditing processes related to major project delivery or program management
Strong knowledge in project controls software such as EcoSys, Primavera P6, SAP, and Oracle (or Oracle JDE)
Working knowledge of engineering, contracts &
procurement, construction, commissioning, project controls, health &
safety, environment &
community and risk multi-discipline workflows and interactions for large capital projects.
High attention to detail, motivation, and commitment to quality outcomes.
Ability to operate effectively and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment utilizing agile methodologies
Demonstrated ability to learn and quickly comprehend new concepts and technologies
Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including functional managers and discipline leads on the project, clients, outside vendors and contractors
Demonstrated strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills including root cause analysis training
Ability to effectively work with and lead the larger team to drive continuous improvement on the project
Deep knowledge of project controls disciplines
Proven ability to work within a matrix organization
Ability to foster an inclusive environment for their team while grounding to the Jansen core values
Ability to work and delegate effectively
Motivates themselves and peers to promote and engage in team building and relationship building activities
